Road Runner Dent Repair – Beep-Beep!

Most of us would be familiar with that iconic sound, BEEP BEEP, but Road Runner we are talking about today
is far more intimidating. Officially considered a mid-year car, the 1969 (and a half) Plymouth Road
Runner is probably one of the most underrated vehicles.
Although all the Road Runner’s came with 383 cc engines, you could order the Hemi 426 cc engine
for extra power. An additional 440 cubic inch, equiped with three 2 barrel Holley carburetor option was made available and
the rest is history.
Today, Jack helps Terry Dammer from Attention To Detail in Brandon, SD to fix a small dent or “slight imperfection”
as Terry calls it, on the door of the car. Although the car is a Sioux Falls local with surprisingly low
miles clocked in, we must remember that it is over 50 years old. This Road Runner was drag-raced
for about two years and was then replaced and parked for a very long time, unfortunately.
Fortunately, it was pulled out of “retirement” about 22 years ago and restored about 15 years ago
by Terry and his team. The ’69 Road Runner does not stand out and does not boast a long list of
special features, but it does what it was meant to do – DRAG RACE! The car does not have hubcaps
or even a radio, just some black steel wheels and chrome lug nuts. It does, however, have a
lightweight fiberglass hood that helps make it faster than cars with Hemi engines in them.
This particular car was even clocked running a quarter-mile strip at 12 seconds and some even at 11
seconds. Therefore, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the 1969 Road Runner was ranked as the
third fastest production car made in that year.
With the dent removed, it was easy to see why a “slight imperfection” forced Terry to get Jack on
the case. For a car that is over 50 years old, this Road Runner looks like it would give any coyote a
run for its money!

And talking about money, Plymouth paid Warner Bros. $50,000 to use the Road Runner name and
another $10,000 to develop the horn.
